Budapest: Day Negy

OK so i know these budapest entries are taking ages, but dammit, we were there for almost six days! Anyway here’s Day Four.Spent ages looking around our street for the “Palace of Wonders” which was meant to be a few doors down from our hostel, but as is the normal hungarian way of not making sense, it totally contradicted all numbering rules and was located somewhere i would never have guessed in a million years. and its not a palace of wonders, its a palace of wonder why this place could ever be remotely seen as tourist attraction. Stuck around for 5 mins or so, enough time for me to make a twit of myself by poking at some weird looking machine only to turn and realise some hungarian family were actually playing a virtual shooting game on the machine and i had stood right in the way. So having decided that we really rather liked the Castle District, we went there again with a view to actually sticking around for a couple hours or so. Took a few snaps around the Fisherman’s Bastion, overlooking the Pest side which looks much better when you’re looking over it rather than being in it! The church was rather nice although i think i may have seen nicer ones. rather big though and good ole comfy seats. We stopped to eat at Cafe Sisi (yep its pronounced like that) and almost considered upping and leaving cos the food was rather overpriced for the simple meals on it. Damn tourist spots. There was a museum of Catering and Commerce only we couldn’t find it cos it was so obscure. Finally found it in a corridor, where little old ladies greeted us and one lady showed us around the “musuem” which was pretty damn small and although patriotic Hungarians would find it very interesting, it was only mildly so for me since i couldnt understand half of what she was saying and i’m not big on history either. (We thought they might have ice cream makers and things in the catering section). Wondered whether we were supposed to tip the lady(it was eerily silent when we walked around and she waited for us to finish looking before launching into an inaudible speech about some other thing) but then some other visitors walked in and we made a dash for it. We walked around the Hungarian National Gallery for 20 mins but it was mainly a bunch of huge paintings which can only sustain your interest if you’re a national art curator or completely stoned. My memory’s starting to go a bit hazy but we also strolled along the Royal Palace Grounds which were grand and really pretty with some cool statues. Ehweeka and I wondered what we should do for dinner and she made the rather accidental but fantastic suggestion that instead of going out for dinner we could always just go back and “cook ourselves”. I never laughed so hard. Also went to St Stephen’s Basilica, inside was air conditioning (oh yes) and wide white walls with lots of artwork and portraits on them. unfortunately didnt get to go up to the top and see the view :(Best bit of the day and i think maybe the trip was the Opera. I can’t remember whether it was going to or coming from Opera, but i managed to step on a train before the doors shut on Ehweeka and Jooster, leaving them looking bemused on the platform. Subsequently realised the train was going the wrong way. Hmm that was a bit embarrassing. Anyway, managed to locate ultra bargain cheap seats for Onegin, fantastic location for the price which was like £2. The venue was really nice and gold and elaborate without looking too tacky, and i didnt think ballet would be good but it had a nice story behind it and the guys had nice legs. But no, the reason i liked it was because it was a very good production 😀
