Budapest: Day Kutto

Figured I better get this down before my memory goes completely.

Day two, woke up relatively refreshed and in time for our breakfast, which we paid for on this morning out of curiousity and laziness to find our own nourishment. Bottom line – it was pretty crap, consisted of juice, bread and butter, salami, peaches and muesli/cereal. Granted it was 2 euros, but not worth it considering the next few days i continued to steal some of this breakfast whilst passing the kitchen without anyone noticing and without having to pay..Our plans had somewhat changed since we woke up an hour later than originally planned. We decided to go to a market in some obscure, dusty place which reminded me of those old western movies with the ball of hay or whatever it is rolling down the dry, dirty street. Strangely, even though we arrived at around 1pm, nothing was there.. well, some antiques (most of them 2nd hand furniture, junk etc) but most stalls had left and hardly anyone was around. The most amusing thing there was the toilet facilities.. a bored looking woman with a bumbag sat outside the “bathroom” and there was a sign indicating you had to pay 20F to use it. Oh and the loo roll was outside..grab as much as u can and enter the dingy room to do your business..hehe. Ended up going into one of the cafes and having a hotdog mmmm.

Second tourist stop, one of the budapest caves.. oddly situated in a residential area, having to take the HEV (a kind of urban, over-ground train), and it was pretty small but pretty cool. (Something worth mentioning – we detoured into a cake/pastry shop whilst we were in the area, had some nice soft cake things with powdery white stuff over it mmm) Took a lot of pictures, we were the only ones there so we could act like fools (and we did) without embarrassment. Evidently my two companions found the dark corners a little scary (hence pushing me to the front momentarily)…

Third and last on the itinerary, Margaret Island. Its the big bit in between Buda and Pest on the Danube, and it took us yonks to walk the bridge that links buda and the island (bloody windy too) but good exercise and worth it. The island is supposed to be the place where hungarians go to chill and relax, has lots of greenary, cycle/bike paths, hotel/spa, fountains etc. (Interestingly, lonely planet tells you not to go there after dark cos thats when the freaks come out..) We hired out bikes and some 2 seater pedal car thing (cept we squashed in 3 ppl after we got away from the bloke who hired them to us) and went around the island. Nice area, good for walking your dog and picnicking etc. By the time we had pedalled the island we were incredibly exhausted and went back to have some good ole instant noodles for dinner, some things you just cant get tired of!
